Is Your TikTok Bio Link Broken? What Actually Happens to App Store Links on Each Device
Your App Store or Play Store link may work on your phone and fail for your viewers. We tested TikTok bio links on desktop, iPhone and Android. Here's what each combination does and how to check yours.
Many creators and app makers put a direct App Store or Play Store link in their TikTok bio, tap it once, see the store open, and move on.
The catch is that what you see depends on the device you test on. A link that works on your phone can be broken for a large share of your viewers, and TikTok doesn't tell you.
We tested the same TikTok bio links on different devices. The results differ more than we expected.
Tested September 2026. TikTok and the operating systems update often, so results may differ on your device or app version. That's a good reason to test your own link.
The test results
| Link type | Where it was tapped | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| App Store link | Desktop computer | Opens the App Store page |
| App Store link | Android phone | Opens |
| Play Store link | iPhone | Play Store page opens |
| App Store link | iPhone | White page with "Action can't be completed" |
| Play Store link | Android phone | Warning: "this link is potentially unsafe." The listing then loads, but you can't download, and "Open in Play Store app" returns "Action can't be completed" |
Two things stand out.
1. The most common failure is an App Store link on an iPhone. Tapping it inside TikTok gives a blank white page and the message "Action can't be completed." There's no store page and no explanation for the viewer. That error is the same dead end covered in why your TikTok bio link to the App Store isn't working.
2. The Android case is trickier because it looks half-working. The Play Store listing does load after a warning screen. But the download doesn't work, and the "Open in Play Store app" button fails with the same error. A creator who glances at it may think it's fine. A viewer who wants to install the app can't.
Why so many creators never notice
The pattern in the table explains a lot of broken bio links we've seen.
- Testing on the wrong device. If you build your app on a Mac, check the link from your desktop, and the App Store page opens, it looks fixed. It only fails once you tap it on an iPhone inside TikTok.
- Testing on the wrong OS. An iPhone user who tests a Play Store link sees it open, and an Android user who tests an App Store link sees it open. Both walk away thinking it works, even though their own store's link is the one that fails.
- Testing outside TikTok. Pasting the link in a browser tells you nothing about how it behaves inside TikTok's in-app browser.
- The Android "almost works" screen. The listing loads, so it looks fine at a glance.
- No error reporting. TikTok doesn't send an alert when a viewer hits a dead end, and a direct store link has no analytics of its own. Nobody sees the visitors who bounce, so there's no signal that anything is wrong.
We've noticed creators who keep posting regularly with a store link in their bio that fails on the most common device combination. It doesn't look like carelessness. The link was probably tested once, on the wrong device, and looked fine.
Why it happens
TikTok opens links in its own in-app browser rather than Safari or Chrome. That browser doesn't hand off to the App Store or Play Store the way a normal browser does, so some combinations of link and operating system fail. The same links work fine from a desktop or an ordinary browser. That's why the failure is so easy to miss. The same class of failure also hits Instagram bios, Linktree buttons, and website store buttons: App Store links are failing on TikTok and Instagram.
The reliable fix is to get the visitor out of the in-app browser and into their real browser, where the store link works normally.
How to check your own link in 5 minutes
- Get the right devices. You need at least one iPhone and one Android phone. Borrow them from friends if needed.
- Open TikTok on each device and go to your own profile, or ask a friend to open your profile from theirs.
- Tap your bio link from inside TikTok. Don't paste it into a browser.
- Check both store links on both phones. That's four combinations: App Store on iPhone, App Store on Android, Play Store on iPhone, Play Store on Android.
- Look for the failures: a white page, "Action can't be completed," or a "potentially unsafe" warning followed by a store page that won't let you install.
If any of those show up, some of your viewers are hitting a dead end.
The fix: one link that handles every device
With pleaseopen.me you replace the direct store link with a single short link, like pleaseopen.me/yourname.
- It routes each visitor to the right store. iPhone users go to the App Store and Android users go to Google Play, so you don't have to pick one. This matters on TikTok, which allows only one bio link.
- On TikTok, visitors see a short guide to opening the page in their browser, then they're redirected to the right store.
- On Instagram and Facebook, the in-app browser is escaped automatically and the visitor lands in the store in one step. How that escape works: Instagram is blocking your App Store links — here's the fix.
- You get analytics. You can see how many people clicked, where they were sent, and which countries they came from, none of which a direct store link gives you.
- It's free to start, and setup takes about a minute.

Summary
- Store links behave differently by device: desktop and cross-OS tests often succeed, while an App Store link on an iPhone and a Play Store link on Android both fail inside TikTok.
- A one-device test can look fine and hide a broken experience for many of your viewers.
- Test all four combinations, from inside TikTok.
- If any fail, route visitors through a link that gets them out of the in-app browser first.
